It all started 25 years ago when Joe Davidson – a local from Oklahoma, turned the idea of an off-set smoker into one of America’s most famous and award winning barbecue companies. Today, Joe Davidson remains one of the most decorated barbecue champions in the world, and the leader of the Oklahoma Joe’s Barbecue company.

“Oklahoma Joe” Davidson’s journey to being one of the greatest barbeque chefs of all time began in 1987 when he saved up $2000 working side jobs out of his college apartment and built 18 smokers that he took to the State Fair. After the smoke had cleared, each and every smoker he made was sold, with pre-orders for hundreds more. The Oklahoma Joe’s brand was born.

With his passion for smokers naturally came a love of barbecue that led him to become a Master of the “Que” and regular competitor in national barbecue competitions. From his first entry in the T-Town BBQ Cook-off in Tulsa to winning the coveted Grand Champion Overall Title at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship, Joe and his teams have gone onto win over 300 titles, including the super bowls of BBQ - The American Royal and Memphis in May.

One of America's top BBQ icons, Joe Davidson pioneered the off-set smoker and even with over 1,000,000 units sold, Joe still wanted to do more for barbecue and aspired to bring championship barbecue to the world. So in the mid 1990’s and after much persuading, he finally convinced a good buddy and his wife Page to go into the barbecue restaurant business with him. Oklahoma Joe's Barbecue and Catering was created in 1995, and the first Oklahoma Joe’s restaurant opened in January 1996 in Oklahoma. Later that same year, the legendary gas station location was opened on the corner of 47th Avenue and Mission Road in Kansas City. Now, twenty years after serving up the world’s most acclaimed and award winning barbecue in the Midwest, the Oklahoma Joe’s family is proud to be offering it’s championship beef, pork, poultry, ribs, beans and sauce to the Washington, DC community.
